How to Study Abroad in France for Free

It's no secret: France is one of the most popular destinations for study abroad students, but it isn't exactly known for being an inexpensive country. As a study abroad student in France, you can try to use federal financial aid or find a study abroad program that offers scholarships, but what if you want to go to France without accumulating more student loans? Is it possible to study in one of the most expensive countries in the world for free? For students wanting to study in France on a tight budget, it's worth shopping around. Maybe not totally not-paying-a-penny free, but yes -- a resounding yes! Studying in France debt-free is totally possible. I've done it and lots of others have too. You just have to have a little know-how, a lot of patience, and an independent streak. And speaking French reasonably well won't hurt. Here's how: Live on a Budget While Studying in France Whether you're studying abroad with a provider, through your university, or directly enrolling at one of France's many prestigious universities, there are a few quick tips anyone can use to save money while studying in France. Here are our favorite quick tips to get you started: Consider studying in smaller cities, away from Paris, for a more authentic (and inexpensive) French experience. Cities such as Grenoble, Lyon, and Cannes are good possibilities. Avoid touristy areas where restaurant prices will skyrocket -- for trips to these attractions, pack a baguette-and-cheese lunch from the corner store. Don't be afraid of dingy looking restaurants: what you’re looking for is many happy-looking people speaking French, the lack of an English-language menu, and a fat chef. Students and the under-25's are eligible for quite a few discounts in France. Purchase an international youth travel card and you'll get discounted entry to the Eiffel Tower and other major sights around France. In some places, your age alone will be enough to cheapen the price (it never hurts to ask!). Take a look at this list of resources for student deals and discounts in France. Take out large sums of money at a time from your bank account back home at ATM's around the cities. Take this money and deposit it into your newly-opened French bank account. This way, you can avoid repetitive fees for withdrawing money and ease your purchasing convenience with a French debit card. Au Pair and Get French Classes Paid For If you want to study abroad to learn French but don't want or need a degree, you may want to consider becoming an au pair in France. Au pairs can be up to 30 years old and come to France as a sort of sponsored worker, typically with some kind of exchange program. Au pairs only have the right to work in France as au pairs, have specific working hours of no more than 30 hours per week (after school and on Wednesdays) and get a room, a transportation card, and a small monthly stipend of around 275 Euros as payment. Direct enrollment costs a whopping EU437 (about $550) -- and that includes a year of basic student health insurance!

10 Most Popular Questions Asked During Visa Interviews

Whether you know it or not, you’d have to confront the consular and answer some grilling questions before the stamp descends on your visa to allow you travel to the United States or anywhere in the western world; and come to think of it, your ability to answer questions correctly determines if you’re granted that visa or not. It does not matter if you’ve been rejected once or twice at the embassy; you’ll be rejected again and again until you can fully convince the consular you have what it takes to travel to his/her country. And no point getting mad at the officer, he/she is highly trained to approve your visa or reject it based on how he/she evaluates you and how convincing you answer the questions put to you. Head or tail, it helps to be thoroughly prepared before meeting with the consular for your interview, and while hundreds of questions might be thrown at you based on the training and whims of the interviewing officer, the following 10 questions and the answers might help put you in the right frame of mind to meet with the consular. Meanwhile, let us use traveling to the US for our example. i. Why do you want to travel to the USA? Say the truth about why you're travelling because the consular is trained to see through lies. You might say: I’m travelling for tourism purpose and to see our daughter who is based on Texas. We intend to visit Disneyland in Florida, Niagara Falls, Pittsburgh, and possibly Las Vegas if we have the time because these places are within a drivable distance of where our daughter lives. ii. Why must you visit at this time? This is summer and the best time to visit places in the US. But apart from this, our daughter arranged for her leave to fall to this time so that she can have the time to take us round places within and outside her city. Due to our age, visiting during winter might not be too suitable for us because of the snow and weather storms. iii. How long will you be staying in the US? We shall be staying X number of months, between X to Y months. iv. Why do you want 1 year visa when 3 months is okay for you? There is always a lot to see during Christmas in New York and Detroit (mention the state you’re visiting) among others. We’d love to see the fireworks and displays and even do some Christmas shopping. There are always a lot of places to visit and see in your country, and due to our age we may not have another opportunity to visit again. v. Where will you be staying in the US? We shall be staying at XYZ street, city, state, and zip. Ensure to memorize the address and make sure it tallies with what you have on your visa application. vi. Who is sponsoring your trip and expenses over there? Our daughter is taking care of all our expenses. She works at XYZ and has been in the US for 11 years. Provide proof. vii. Can I have the contact details of your relatives in the US? Yes, her phone number is XXX-YYY-ZZZ and her home address is XXX-YYY-ZZZ. Ensure you know this information off-hand without having to peruse through jotted notes. viii. Will you take up job offers or engage in business when you get to the US? I do not intend to take up job offers or engage in business during this trip. I’m only visiting my daughter and wish to visit exotic and fascinating places with her. So I intend to return to my country as soon as my daughter nudges me to return home. ix. Who will take care of your home and business when you are gone? My partner will run the business in my absence and I also have overseers to manage things behind me. Meanwhile, I have arranged for my accumulated leave to fall within this period to enable me travel. x. Have you bought airline tickets or medical insurance? No. But we shall buy it as soon as we get our visa.

Get Your U.S. Student Visa

Here are some guidelines to help make your student visa application process smooth and successful. Getting your visa to study in the United States takes time but can be a surprisingly easy procedure. It is well worth the effort. In many countries, the number of student visas issued by the United States has grown significantly in the last year. While the application process for an international student or exchange visitor visa can be confusing, hundreds of thousands of students are able to meet the requirements for a visa each year. Last Year 644,204 F-1 Student visas were issued and there are currently 1.2 million students in the United States on F and M visas! After a college, university, or English language school has accepted you for admission to full-time study, the school will send you a document called an I-20 form, which is the application for an F-1 visa. If you will be an Exchange Visitor, the organization or U.S. Government agency that is sponsoring you will send you a DS-2019 form, which is the application for a J-1 visa. You can visit the website of the United States Embassy or Consulate in your country at usembassy.gov to read about Nonimmigrant Visas. Go to the section on visas and read about the correct procedure currently in place for Nonimmigrant Visas. 1. First, your school or university will send you a form confirming that you have been accepted at an institution authorized by the U.S. Citizenship and Naturalization Service (USCIS) to enroll non-immigrant students (the I-20 for an F-1 visa or the DS-2019 for a J-1 visa.) You will read and sign this form. Be careful to make sure that the name and spelling on your passport is exactly the same as the name and spelling on your application for acceptance to the school and that the school has entered your name as it appears on your passport on the I-20 or DS-2019 Form. All applicants’ names have to be submitted for a security clearance. Citizens of some countries and students who will study certain subjects at a university have to undergo additional screenings that takes several additional weeks of processing. Again, it is crucial that you allocate plenty of time for the visa application process. 2. Second, you will need to make an appointment for a visa interview and to pay some required fees. Under a revision in the regulations, Student Visas can be issued up to 120 days before the date on your form I-20. Exchange Visitor Visas can be issued anytime before the date on the DS-2019. You should apply as early as possible for your visa.

USA PHOTO REQUIREMENTS

Each visa applicant is required to submit one color photo taken within the last 6 months of the application date according to the following instructions: Size: Measure 50 mm (2 inches) square. The applicant's head (measured from top of the hair to the bottom of the chin) must measure 25 mm (1 inch) to 35 mm; the applicant's eye level must be 28 mm to 35 mm from the bottom of the photo. Photographs of the incorrect size will not be accepted. Background: The photo must be on a white background. Colored or patterned backgrounds are unacceptable. Type of photo: Show the applicant facing straight ahead, looking neither down nor to the side, with applicant's head centered in the frame and applicant's ears exposed.

PERMANENT RESIDENT SERVICES

Once an individual has entered the U.S. on an immigrant visa, he/she will be granted permanent resident status. A permanent resident card (also called a "green card" or "I-551") will be issued by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and mailed to the individual's U.S. address. The card serves as a valid identification document and proof that the individual is eligible to live and work in the U.S. Permanent residents, traveling outside of the U.S. with their passport, should be prepared to present their permanent resident card to re-enter the U.S. Lawful Permanent Residents (LPRs) have most of the rights of American Citizens: LPRs may live permanently in the United States provided they do not commit any actions that would make them removable (deportable) under the immigration law. LPRs may be employed in the United States. LPRs are protected by all of the laws of the United States, the state of residence and local jurisdictions. Naturalization: Many Permanent Residents of the United States have the ultimate goal of becoming American citizens. Once an LPR completes the necessary residence and physical presence requirements (which vary in certain cases), he/she can file an application for naturalization. NOTE: Green cards can only be issued or replaced in the United States and can never be obtained overseas.

Visa Temporary Workers (H/L Visas)

Anyone going to the United States with the intention of working there temporarily must obtain a nonimmigrant work visa. Persons entering the United States on a visitor or business visa or under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) are not permitted to work. Unlike some countries, the United States government does not issue work visas for casual employment. In general, work visas are based on a specific offer of employment. Filing the I-129 Petition USCIS Form I-129 consists of a basic petition and different supplements that apply to the various visa categories. In order to petition for a temporary worker, the prospective employer or agent must file Form I-129, Petition for Nonimmigrant Worker, and the appropriate supplement with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) accompanied by the required payment, and initial evidence or documentation. In some cases, the employer must get a certificate from the Department of Labor prior to filing the I-129. This process is described below in the appropriate categories. Once the petition is approved, the employer or agent is sent a Notice of Approval, Form I-797. Approval of a petition does not guarantee visa issuance to an applicant. Applicants must also establish that they are admissible to the U.S. under provisions of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA).

Foreign entrepreneurs taste initial success through New York's Innovators visa program

With the ever increasing difficulty of being selected in the H-1B program, many US universities are developing their own gateway to help foreign workers obtain a visa and invest in the US. The City University of New York (CUNY) schools, for instance, created the International Innovators Initiative (IN2NYC) last year for the same purpose. After less than a year, two from its initial beneficiaries are now setting up their respective businesses in the city. The first one is Hungarian firm Dartboard, which would commence its operations by helping the students of La Guardia Community College on Long Island manage their student loans. Indian website Mogul, the second one, is set to mentor the students of City College of New York’s Zahn Innovation Center this year. The CUNY's unique visa gateway program successfully enables entrepreneurs to qualify for cap-exempt H-1B visas, while contributing to the central mission of a particular community or institution. In this case, it took sincere dedication from the CUNY end to utilize such a partnership. Indeed, the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) will have to monitor these chosen firms as they juggle with developing their respective businesses and helping the community. In the end, this will benefit not only the companies, but also the students, and eventually the city. These firms are expected to set up training programs, research, mentoring programs, and, ultimately, hiring, as the program's primary goal is to expand. However, what the country needs is to see the International Entrepreneurship Rule as a law. With this, foreign entrepreneurs can now become eligible for a two-year entrepreneur visa if they can prove their company’s potential to deliver growth, create jobs for more US citizens, and contribute to the country’s economy. Talk to one of our migration lawyers for further clarifications and updates on US immigration laws. You can also take our free online assessment to see if you are eligible to apply for an H-1B Visa to the US.
